I urge the Department of the Interior to authorize no new lease sales for its 2023-2028 Program for the Outer Continental Shelf. The ongoing presence of fossil fuel projects in coastal communities has been disruptive to quality of life for the region, leaving behind land loss, air and water pollution, and increasing economic risks to essential markets, such as fishing and housing, along the coast. Impacted regions are not only overburdened by the very real risks of the extractive industry, they also do not see an equitable sharing of any benefits from, or response efforts to, the aftermath of fossil fuel projects.

There is no need for more offshore oil to supply the regional and national energy markets when we have reliable access to renewable energy production, at lower costs, and while the demand for oil begins its decline. If our country is going to meet decarbonization goals and avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis, we need to put an immediate end to any more drilling for oil and gas. The DOI and BOEM must adhere to their missions of protecting the nation’s natural resources and upholding environmental responsibility. Please issue a plan with no new leases to ensure that frontline communities have a chance to live and thrive in the places they call home.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released a proposed five-year plan for oil and gas leasing in the Outer Continental Shelf. With enough public pressure, they could decide to end all new offshore drilling projects for the foreseeable future. The comment period ends on October 6th, which is why it’s crucial that we generate as many comments as possible before then.
